Centenary of the Diocese of Lancaster – The Our Lady of Lourdes Statue Tour
Mary’s appearance at Lourdes to Saint Bernadette reflects her deep compassion for and identification with the poor. Saint Bernadette came from a very humble and uneducated background, yet Mary chose to appear to her in the simple grotto at Lourdes. By revealing herself as the Immaculate Conception to Bernadette—a profound theological title—Mary shows that the Church’s teachings about her are not abstract or removed from daily life. Instead, they are deeply relevant to everyone, particularly the poor, reflecting God’s love, concern, and the dignity He places on their lives and holiness.
During this special tour, three statues of Our Lady of Lourdes will journey to every primary and secondary school in the Diocese, staying in each school for three school days. These statues have been blessed and commissioned to encourage devotion to Our Lady, deepen our faith, and strengthen the bonds between our diocesan schools.
We shared a beautiful Celebration of the Word with Alston Lane and the children sang traditional hymns, signed The Hail Mary and reflected in silence. We look forward to filling in our school to school travelling scrapbook of activities and engagement with Mary until we deliver the statue and join St.Mary’s Claughton for a shared Celebration of the Word.
